Posted: November 12, 2010

The Hammonton boys' soccer program captured its first sectional crown in dramatic fashion on Thursday, when the fifth-seeded Blue Devils used a late goal to upend No. 2 seed Timber Creek, 1-0, in the South Jersey Group 3 final.

Jimmy Lamp'l provided the historic goal, heading in a corner kick by Michael Ashiotes with 2 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in regulation.

Goalie Vince Wilson stopped nine shots and received defensive support from stopper Chris Simon, sweeper Dan DellaPeruta, and fullbacks Ryan Fillipone and Kevin Melchiorre.

"Timber Creek is a very fast and skilled team, so we knew we had to take advantage of every opportunity," said Dave Thompson, Hammonton's first-year coach.

"Winning the championship feels great," Thompson added. "I'm excited for our 11 seniors. They worked so hard for this."

South Jersey Group 1. Josh Pacana fashioned a second-half hat trick and Jon Sjolander (four saves) supplied shutout goaltending as top-seeded Pitman pulled away from No. 6 seed Maple Shade, 3-0, in the sectional title game.

South Jersey Non-Public A. Dominick Palmieri's second goal of the night, 1:30 into overtime, gave top-seeded St. Augustine a 3-2 championship victory over No. 3 seed St. Joseph-Metuchen at Holmdel.
