TO THE CHAGRIN of "Dancing With the Stars" viewers who are imbued with the basic sense of sight, Bristol Palin retained her spot Tuesday night on the ballroom-dancing reality show while judges' darling Brandy Norwood got the boot.

Norwood told Michael Maloney, of the blog TV Squad, that she was numb over the loss. "I don't have any regrets. I gave it everything I had," Norwood told Maloney. "I am so proud of [partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy] and of me, and I say that humbly. I've tapped into a power that I thought was gone. I'm so thankful for that."

Although critics have claimed that Bristol's success has ruined the credibility of "DWTS," Tuesday's results show had the highest ratings in seven weeks.

Steven Cowan, of Vermont, Wis., wasn't at home to hear those results. The evening before, Cowan, who thought that Palin was still on the show only because of her famous momma lost it (he'd just come home from a bar) when Palin's name was announced.

He loaded his shotgun and shot his television screen, according to the Associated Press. He then allegedly turned the gun on his wife, Janice. Lady Tattle assumes that Ms. Cowan either made the mistake of being a Bristol supporter or simply told her hubs that his use of a firearm was a bit of an overreaction. Fortunately, Cowan's wife escaped, but not before a SWAT team stand-off that ended in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. "He scared the bejebees out of me," Janice told authorities.

(This isn't the first time that Cowan has gone after his long-suffering spouse, she reports. Fifteen years ago, she said, he threatened her with a machete when he couldn't find ammunition. He has also threatened to shoot one of their cows, who we assume has no political affiliation.)

Cowan, who his wife said is bipolar, was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment and could face 10 years in prison, if convicted.

After this week's results show, Bristol told "Access Hollywood" that her haters are fueling her creative fire. Could that explain the vitriol Bristol and her little sister, Willow, showed on Facebook?

A Willow peer, noted cultural critic Tre, posted a Facebook status that read, "Sarah Palin's Alaska, is failing so hard right now," referring to the ratings-busting TLC show hosted by the former veep candidate and Alaska governor. First, Bristol chided Tre, writing, "You're running your mouth just to talk s--t." Willow then got in on the action, writing, "Haha your so gay. I have no idea who you are, But what I've seen pictures of, your disgusting . . . My sister had a kid and is still hot." She added, "Tre stfu. Your such a fagot."

Bristol took to her Facebook account once more yesterday, writing, "Willow and I shouldn't have reacted to negative comments about our family. We apologize."

But nothing about the slur-throwing nonsense? Does that mean we should officially cross Willow off the list for a possible "It Gets Better" anti-bullying PSA? Not to mention a place in Alaska's next grammar bee?

GOProud.org, the gay tea-party group, which would be way more fun without the political connotations, told TMZ that Willow isn't a homophobe. "The slur used here is one you could hear on the streets of West Hollywood or Chelsea every day of the week. Apparently, it's only a homophobic slur when it comes from the daughter of a conservative female leader," the statement read. "Make no mistake; this is all about destroying Sarah Palin by any means necessary."

Legions of gay-bashed men would beg to differ.

But Lady Tattle gets it. Willow is still a kid, and in the unfortunate position of having her teenage stupidity aired for the world to see. But that doesn't make being a bigot any better. Girl deserves a talking-to.

Also, Momma Palin, get your kids some media training, stat. The family has been in the spotlight for a couple of years. Haven't they learned to stuff the skeletons as far back in the closet as possible?
