Temple offensive coordinator Rhule to interview for top job

Posted: December 18, 2010

Temple offensive coordinator Matt Rhule is expected to formally interview today for the head-coaching position that became vacant when Al Golden left after five seasons to take the job at Miami.

Rhule, who has been a member of the staff since 2006 and the offensive coordinator since '08, met with athletic director Bill Bradshaw earlier this week, in what sources familiar with the situation have called "preliminary" discussions. Herman Frazier, the senior associate AD, was out of town at the time. It is believed that he will be part of these talks.

Sources said that Rhule will be the first person to be interviewed. They also say that Temple was preparing to make an offer to defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio, but he opted to follow Golden to Miami along with four other assistants.

Sources close to two other names that have been mentioned as potential candidates, Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr., and South Carolina quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus, have confirmed their interest. Whether the interest is mutal remains to be seen.

It is believed that Temple would like to get someone in place as quickly as possible, given the fact that this change at the top could have an impact on recruiting. *
