Students' take on Michael Vick

Area students participated in a 10-week program sponsored by Mighty Writers, a South Philadelphia nonprofit. Here's what some wrote about the return of Eagles quarterback Michael Vick after he spent time in prison for dogfighting.

Michael Vick went to jail for a year and some change for his stupid actions. Everybody deserves a second chance, but some people don't think so. People cherish animals more than humans. Why is that?

People despise Vick because of his stupid mistake. But we've seen him go to schools and speak about animal abuse and how he was wrong. He is giving back and proving himself to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.

Story continues below.

Now he plays for the Eagles and he's leading the team to victories. He deserves to be respected.

What the city of Philadelphia is experiencing right now is special. Through Michael Vick, we're watching a man rebuild his career, change his life for the better, and create a brand-new image, while playing at an MVP-caliber level. This is something you could only script in Hollywood.

He has by far paid his debt to society, and at this point in his life and career, he deserves to be forgiven. "Redemption is doing the right thing all across the board," Vick told NBC's Bob Costas a few weeks ago on Football Night in America. "I'm just going to continue to chase success, on and off the field. I think if I do that, I think redemption will come."

Vick has shown remorse and has apologized for his cruelty to dogs. If what he's done isn't enough for some to forgive him, fine. But Vick is an Eagle, and I'm going to watch and enjoy the Mike Vick 2.0 experience for as long as it lasts.

A year ago, fans hissed and scowled at the thought of Michael Vick playing in the NFL again. Today, fans have made a 360-degree turn. He's apologized for dogfighting over and over again. But why should a grown man be obligated to apologize for actions that took place in his own home? He owes an explanation only to the NFL and his former team.

There is no doubt that Vick is an incredibly talented player, and it was only a matter of time before his talent outshone this whole controversy. To judge and condemn this man for one mistake is absurd. We're all human. No one's perfect.
