Phillies Notes: Phillies trade Escalona

Posted: January 11, 2011

The Phillies made another trade with a familiar partner Monday.

Lefthander Sergio Escalona, who was designated for assignment Saturday, was traded to the Houston Astros for minor-league second baseman Albert Cartwright.

Cartwright, who turned 23 in October, played at high single-A Lancaster and double-A Corpus Christi in 2010. He had a .827 OPS at those two levels combined with 30 doubles, 14 triples and 10 home runs.

But most of those numbers were put up in single A. In Corpus Christi, Cartwright had just five extra-base hits in 140 at-bats.

In the field, he made 29 errors in 116 games at second base. The 36th-round pick in 2007 will not be placed on the 40-man roster.

Houston's general manager is Ed Wade, the former Phillies GM who has frequently acquired his old players. Escalona was signed by the Phillies out of Venezuela in 2004 when Wade was GM.

Escalona was removed from the 40-man roster to make room for J.C. Romero's addition. The 26-year-old spent all of last season at double-A Reading and had a 3.81 ERA.

Extra bases

As part of improvements at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies are installing a new HD scoreboard this winter.
