2d car pulled from Schuylkill

A police marine unit and five tow trucks worked through much of Saturday afternoon pulling an ice-shrouded blue 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee from the Schuylkill near the grandstand at Columbia Bridge.

Marine-unit divers plunged into the icy water, first unsuccessfully searching for the driver and then connecting cables to the Jeep so the tow trucks could pull it from the river.

One driver from South Philly Towing said he recovered identification from the Jeep showing that it was owned by a man who lived in the 6700 block of Roosevelt Boulevard.

Story continues below.

The tow-truck operator said his company had called the man's cell phone and visited his house in an unsuccessful effort to find the owner.

The driver said the Jeep apparently had been in the water since Friday night, because it was encrusted with ice. It was spotted by joggers on the path along the Schuylkill.

On Wednesday night, another car was found floating in the river near the same location along Kelly Drive.

No one was found in that vehicle either, and police marine-unit investigators did not find anyone in the river.
