Gosnell also became reliant on referrals from out of state because local referral agencies knew his reputation and "would not recommend his clinic," the employee testified. He readily accepted women who were unable to get abortions elsewhere because their pregnancies were beyond 24 weeks.

One of those out-of-state referrals was Karnamaya Mongar, 41, a refugee from the Asian nation of Bhutan who was living with relatives in Woodbridge, Va. Gosnell is charged with murder in her November 2009 death; her heart stopped after an unlicensed clinic worker gave heavy, repeated doses of pain and sedation drugs, the report said.

On Wednesday, Philadelphia lawyer Bernard Smalley filed a lawsuit against Gosnell on behalf of Mongar's husband and children.

Smalley said he doesn't know why Mongar was referred to Gosnell since she was only 19 weeks pregnant, "but we'll find out."

Another question Smalley and his firm are delving into: Where is Gosnell's money?

The grand jury estimated that Gosnell "took in as much as $10,000 to $15,000 a night, mostly in cash" - generating $1.8 million a year. (The jury said this was not including the money from Gosnell's alleged illegal narcotics trafficking, which is still under investigation by federal authorities.)

Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams said $250,000 was found at Gosnell's home when authorities raided it.

But Gosnell's other obvious assets - his house, a beach home in Brigantine bought in 1992, and a multiunit rental property - belie his estimated income.

"I have a keen interest in finding out where the money is," Smalley said.

Charged and Arraigned

In addition to Kermit Gosnell:

Adrienne Moten, 33, of Upper Darby. Murder in the death of a live infant, conspiracy, and racketeering. Held without bail.

Lynda Williams, 42, of Wilmington. Third-degree murder in the death of the patient and murder in the death of live infant. Held without bail.

Tina Baldwin, of South 63d Street, Philadelphia. An unlicensed worker, she is charged with racketeering, conspiracy, and corruption of a minor for allegedly allowing her 15-year-old daughter to administer anesthesia to patients. $150,000 bail.

Madlline Joe, 53, of the 800 block of Atwood Road, Philadelphia. The office manager, she is charged with conspiracy. $250,000 bail.

Elizabeth Hampton, 51, of the 5000 block of Arch Street, Philadelphia. Gosnell's sister-in-law, she is charged with obstruction, hindering prosecution, and perjury. $250,000 bail.

Eileen O'Neil, 54, of Phoenixville. A medical-school graduate who worked as a doctor at the clinic without a license or certification, she is charged with theft by deception, conspiracy, racketeering, and perjury. $1 million bail.

Pearl Gosnell, 49, of Philadelphia. Gosnell's wife, she is charged with performing an abortion at 24 or more weeks, conspiracy, and other related offenses. $1 million bail.

Sherry West, 51, of Newark, Del. Third-degree murder in the death of the patient, performing illegal abortions, conspiracy, racketeering, tampering with records, hindering prosecution, obstructing administration of law, and other related offenses. $2 million bail.
