College Basketball: Penn women wallop Cornell

February 12, 2011|From Staff and Wire Reports

Jess Knapp and Alyssa Baron each had 10 points and a smothering Penn defense allowed just 12 baskets by the Cornell women in a runaway, 51-33 victory for the Quakers (8-12, 2-4 Ivy) over the Big Red (5-15, 2-5) at the Palestra on Friday night.

Knapp and Caroline Nicholson each pulled down six rebounds to lead the Quakers.

Elsewhere: Jasmine Thomas scored 17 points, Krystal Thomas had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and No. 5 Duke (22-2, 8-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) romped, 82-39, over host Wake Forest (12-14, 3-7) in North Carolina. . . . Alexa Deluzio scored 15 of her 20 points in the second half to help No. 19 Florida State (20-5, 8-2 ACC) get a 73-60 victory over Georgia Tech (18-8, 6-4) in Tallahassee, Fla. . . . Corielle Yarde scored 15 points as No. 25 Marist (22-2, 13-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) used stifling defense to pick up a 56-45 road win over Iona (9-16, 5-8) in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Men

Princeton 76, Columbia 46 - Ian Hummer had 25 points and 12 rebounds as the Tigers (18-4, 6-0 Ivy) demolished the Lions (12-9, 3-4) in New York City to maintain a half-game lead over Harvard for the top spot in the conference.

Harvard 78, Yale 75 - Kyle Casey scored 18 points and the Crimson (17-4, 6-1 Ivy) made all six of their free-throw attempts in the final 37 seconds to hold off the Bulldogs (11-10, 4-3) in Cambridge, Mass.

Brown: Tweets from cousin. Texas point guard J'Covan Brown said Friday that he didn't write profane Twitter posts under his account that complained about getting pulled from the No. 3 Longhorns' win over Oklahoma.

Brown said a cousin he declined to identify posted the offending tweets after the game and said he has apologized to his teammates. The Twitter account has been deactivated.

Buckeyes to honor victims. The top-ranked Ohio State men's basketball team will wear uniform patches marking the two-year anniversary of the Continental Connection Flight 3407 crash at its game against No. 13 Wisconsin on Saturday.

Investigators say pilot error led Flight 3407 to stall and crash on Feb. 12, 2009, into a neighborhood in Buffalo, N.Y., killing all 49 people on board and one home's owner.

Ohio State team video coordinator Kevin Kuwik lost his 30-year-old girlfriend, Lorin Maurer, in the crash.

Waiting for a win. While Ohio State is the last remaining undefeated Division I team at 24-0, there is always the other end of the spectrum.

Centenary College in Shreveport, La., is the smallest Division I school in the country, and they have the 0-26 record to prove it. The Gentlemen are actually on a 30-game losing streak, dating back a little more than a year. They next get a chance to end the misery with a game at Missouri-Kansas City (14-10) on Saturday.
