Flyers make no major moves at NHL trade deadline

Not wanting to alter a winning formula - the Flyers lead the NHL with 40 victories - general manager Paul Holmgren did not make any major moves at the NHL trade deadline on Monday afternoon.

The players, predictably, liked the fact Holmgren did not deal anyone off the current roster.

"We've been playing extremely well all year, and we're pretty confident with the group of guys that's in here," center Blair Betts said after a tough practice in Voorhees. "There's a lot of good chemistry, and sometimes, you just don't want to mess with it."

Holmgren did make a minor deal just before the 3 p.m. deadline, acquiring 6-foot-5, 228-pound left winger Tom Sestito from Columbus for two prospects, forwards Michael Chaput and Greg Moore (seven goals for Adirondack).

Last June, Chaput was the Flyers' first draft pick, chosen in the third round. He was unsigned and was playing in juniors, where he had 22 goals this season for Lewiston.

Sestito, 23, had two goals and two assists and was minus-4 in nine games with Columbus this season. He had 11 goals, 21 assists, and 192 penalty minutes in 46 games with AHL Springfield, and will be sent to the Phantoms.

On his Twitter account, Sestito was pleased with the trade.

"Rumor has it Philly likes seeing an ass kicking! Hope to see you soon and will give you what you want!" he tweeted.

Said Holmgren: "He had 30-some points with Springfield, which would make him our second-leading [AHL] scorer. He's a big kid that we always liked, and we think he has a chance to play at some point for us, whether it be later this year" or next. "Certainly next year, he'll get a good look."

Next season, Sestito could replace Dan Carcillo, a potential unrestricted free agent in July.

Holmgren explored other deals, "but nothing came up that made sense for us. As I've said, I like our team . . . and we're ready to go."

In the last two weeks, the Flyers have added winger Kris Versteeg and defenseman Nick Boynton to an already-deep lineup. So the roster Holmgren has put together is the one he hopes will bring the Flyers their first Stanley Cup since 1975.

Holmgren said he recently told the players he "wasn't going to disrupt things. So I'm a man of my word."

Chris Pronger said he was "very" content with the team that leads the Eastern Conference and is one point behind Vancouver for the overall NHL lead. With 20 games remaining, the Flyers have 86 points, two fewer than the entire 2009-10 season.
