Police wound man in suspected home invasion

Police shot and wounded a man Monday night in Port Richmond after being told that he and two others were invading a home, said Philadelphia Lt. Ray Evers.

The man was taken to Aria Health-Torresdale Campus, where he is in stable condition. Police have not identified him because he has not yet been charged.

The two men accompanying the man who was wounded - William Fenwick, 36, of the 4800 block of Walnut Street, and Donald Mason, 31, of the 900 block of East Tioga Street - were charged with aggravated assault, robbery, theft, and related offenses.

About 9:45 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a call about a person screaming in the 4500 block of Melrose Street. As police arrived, a man and woman were fleeing their house with their infant daughter; they told police three intruders were inside.

As the officers approached the house, they saw three men running for the back door and went to nab them. When the men could not get out of the back door, they smashed a window, threw items through it, and doubled back to escape through the front, Evers said.

As the officers gave chase, they heard what they thought was a gunshot and saw one of the men make a movement, Evers said. The officers fired, wounding him in his right buttock.

Police caught up to Fenwick and Mason behind a house in the 2300 block of Orthodox Street.

Investigators later recovered two guns from outside the house believed to be the items thrown from the window. Police also found jewelry taken from the house in a nearby alley.

No weapon was found on the wounded man, Evers said.
