The New Mexico Lobos hammered third-ranked Brigham Young, 82-64, Wednesday night in Provo, Utah, just two days after the Cougars dismissed starting forward Brandon Davies for a violation of the school's honor code.

The game was the first without the 6-foot-9 sophomore, who had started 26 of 29 games and averaged 11.1 points and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds.

The Salt Lake City Tribune reported that Davies, from Provo, was dismissed after he admitted to having sexual relations with his girlfriend. A source told the Tribune that the 19-year-old Davies was "extremely remorseful, heartbroken" but has accepted the punishment.

The honor code requires students to live a chaste and virtuous life and attend church regularly, and abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, drugs, and premarital sex.

BYU officials confirmed Wednesday that Davies wasn't involved in anything criminal that resulted in his dismissal from the team. A review was under way to determine whether the sophomore will be allowed to remain in school, as well as his status with the Cougars next season.

The loss left the Cougars (27-3) reeling just as they had vaulted into the top five, and sought a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Elsewhere: Host Xavier whipped Charlotte, 68-48, Wednesday night to secure at least a share of its fifth straight Atlantic Ten regular-season title, tying the league record. The No. 23 Musketeers improved to 23-6, 14-1, while the 49ers fell to 10-19, 2-13. . . . West Virginia used a late run to upset No. 16 Connecticut, 65-56. The Mountaineers improved to 19-10, 10-7 Big East, while the Huskies fell to 21-8, 9-8. . . . Preston Knowles had 20 points and 10 rebounds in his final home game to lead No. 11 Louisville to an 87-60 victory over Providence. The Cardinals (23-7, 12-5 Big East) clinched one of the top four spots in the conference tournament. The Friars fell to 14-16, 3-14.
