Nutter and LGBT leaders to meet on Boy Scouts sale

Posted: March 06, 2011

On Wednesday, Mayor Nutter will sit down with gay and lesbian leaders to talk about his administration's decision to sell the Boy Scouts building to the youth group to settle a lawsuit that the city lost.

The meeting follows a letter sent Feb. 25 by members of the mayor's advisory board on lesbian, gay, and transgender affairs asking him not to settle the federal case.

"The City of Philadelphia should continue the appeal process to continue the fight against discrimination," said the letter, first reported in the Philadelphia Gay News.

The city wants to sell the building to the Boy Scouts for $500,000 to settle a suit stemming from the city's effort to evict the scouts because they do not allow gay members.

Members of the mayor's advisory board include Chris Bartlett, executive director of the William Way LGBT Community Center, and Jason Crook, owner of Philadelphia Home Art Garden, an art and home-decor business.
