POP . . . plus

Susan Werner: In this world of formulaic, female singer/songwriter "types," Werner is a voice and breed apart. On her new "Kicking the Beehive" album, the agent provocateur shape-shifts her confident and crafty nature from loungy piano blues to guitar-strummed alt country. And tackles contemporary issues that most popsters couldn't even imagine discussing, let alone convey as she does with finesse, insight and humor. World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St. 8 tonight, $30, 215-222-1400, www.worldcafelive.com.

Story continues below.

The Rural Alberta Advantage: Braying, strummy, hook-happy indie pop group from Toronto cuts "a line through the snow" and into young hearts. Also on tap, twisted pop duo Pepper Rabbit and Philly's own Conversations With Enemies. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 8 tonight, $12 (all ages), 215-821-7575, www.r5productions.com.

Ceili Rain: Celtic rockers with spiritual interpinings rouse your body and feed your soul. Tin Angel, 20 S. 2nd St., 7:30 tonight, $18, 215-928-0978, www.tinangel.com.

Telekinesis: Michael Benjamin Lerner steers this tech-attuned power-pop machine, at once woeful in intent and buzzing/bubbly in tone. They're somewhat akin to the Cure, though on "50 Ways" he namechecks Paul Simon! Sharing the stage, the Love Language and Creepoid. Johnny Brenda's, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9 tonight, $12, 215-739-9684, www.johnnybrendas.com.

Engelbert Humperdinck: Crooner who's sold 50 million albums begs, "Release Me." Keswick Theatre, Easton Road and Keswick Avenue, Glenside, 8 p.m. tomorrow, $49.50-$75, 215-572-7650, keswicktheatre.com.

Vance Gilbert: Seasoned Philadelphia-spawned folkster brings it home, with the worldly cabaret stylist Lili Anel as special guest. Tin Angel, 20 S. 2nd St., 7:30 p.m. Saturday, $15, 215-928-0978, www.tinangel.com.

Bigger Lovers: Power pop team of Bret Tobias, Ed Hogarty, Scott Jefferson and Patrick Berkery called it quits in 2005. But proving again you can't keep a good band down for long, they're back with new (and almost new) music to share, a fresh "Little Giant Maxi Single" and their barely released (10 years ago), now re-released "How I Learned to Stop Worrying" long player. Dennis Diken (Smithereens drummer) and Bell Sound are special guests. Johnny Brenda's, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9 p.m. tomorrow, $10/$12, 215-739-9684, www.johnnybrendas.com.
