Penn grads to hear Denzel Washington

Posted: March 22, 2011

Denzel Washington is slated to speak at the University of Pennsylvania's 255th commencement on May 16, according to the Daily Pennsylvanian, the university's newspaper.

Washington's son, Malcolm, is a sophomore at the school. The actor won an Oscar for "Training Day" and starred in such acclaimed films as "Malcolm X," "Glory" and "American Gangster."

Some students reportedly spoke out criticizing the school's pick, saying name-recognition among commencement speakers at universities nationwide is beginning to outweigh direct relevance for college graduates.
