Women's College Basketball: Auriemma disappointed in UConn fans

Posted: March 24, 2011

Connecticut fans may have seen their last NCAA tournament game in Storrs for a while.

Coach Geno Auriemma, disappointed that fewer than 6,000 fans showed up at the 10,000-seat Gampel Pavilion for UConn's second-round win over Purdue on Tuesday, said he would ask athletic director Jeff Hathaway not to bid on hosting the tournament for the next five years.

Auriemma joked that it might help if UConn won more games. The team has lost once in the last three seasons.

"I think we have a real spoiled group of fans," he said.

Pat McKenna, a spokesman for the team, said Wednesday that Auriemma was serious about asking not to host the tournament, but has not yet spoken to Hathaway.

Doty on the mend. Connecticut guard Caroline Doty has been sitting on the bench all season, recovering from a third tear to the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.

Doty, a former Germantown Academy star, will have two years of eligibility when she returns in the fall. She said it's been a frustrating season, but a character-building one.

With clipboard in hand, Doty watches, learns, and gives advice when she sees something a player on the court might not.

Battling the Big East. This might be as close as Joanne P. McCallie ever gets to coaching in the Big East tournament.

Her Duke team is the lone outsider in a four-team Philadelphia Regional field that includes Big East schools DePaul, Georgetown, and UConn.

"We're definitely the outsider," McCallie said. "Nobody is talking about Duke.

Utah makes it official. Utah removed the "interim" tag from coach Anthony Levrets' title. He replaces Elaine Elliott, who retired after taking a year's leave of absence.
