Police have identified the victim of a fatal motorcycle crash in Chester County on Sunday.

James Eugene Smith Jr., 45, of Coatesville, lost control of his 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle on southbound Route 202 between Morstein Road and Boot Road in East Goshen Township at 1:13 p.m., said Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Det. William Cahill.

Cahill said Smith, who had a valid driver's license with the motorcycle endorsement, entered the center grass median, striking the center guide cable and posts between the northbound and southbound lanes. Smith, who was killed instantly, was wearing a full face motorcycle helmet, Cahill said.

Smith was riding with five other motorcyclists at the time, and police believe speed was a factor in the crash, Cahill said. He said there were no adverse weather conditions.

The accident, which closed southbound Route 202 for four hours, is being investigated by the police department's Traffic Safety Unit, Cahill said. Police are requesting that witnesses call the department at 610-692-5100.

Police were assisted by West Goshen Police, West Whiteland Police, East Whiteland Police, Chester County Serious Crash Accident Team, Chester County Coroner's Office and Goshen Fire Company, Cahill said.
