Man clings to life following W. Phila. shooting

A man in his mid to late 40s was shot and critically wounded early today on a street West Philadelphia, police said.

Officers responding to a report of gunfire found the victim face down and unresponsive in the southbound lane of the 600 block of South 56th Street at 1:45 a.m., police said. He had been shot once in the back of the head.

The man was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was reported in critical condition.

Investigators are trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Police in the meantime have identified a man killed Monday night in a drive-by shooting near North 50th Street and Haverford Avenue in West Philadelphia.

He was Gerald Campbell, 20, and he lived in the neighborhood on the 4900 block of Reno Street, police said.

Two other men were wounded the attack and remained hospitalized this morning.

Police issued an alert for a black Buick Regal following the 8:30 p.m. shooting.

No arrests have been reported.
