Mandatory N.J. fishing registry sign-ups starting

TRENTON - Mandatory sign-ups at New Jersey's free saltwater fishing registry will begin Wednesday at www.saltwaterregistry.nj.gov. Anglers 16 and older are required to join so state environmental officials can gather information to make decisions intended to safeguard species, authorities said.

Except for those who fish from charter boats or go after crabs, clams, or lobster, all must sign up and carry their registration with them while fishing.

Gov. Christie signed legislation creating the New Jersey registry in February, otherwise anglers would have had to pay a $15 fee to join a federal registry.

They must register with the state regardless of whether they are registered with the federal system. Fees they paid to the federal system will not be refunded by the National Marine Fisheries Service. - AP
