Limits put on photos at S.C. debate

WASHINGTON - News agencies, including the Associated Press, protested limits on media coverage of the Republican presidential debate Thursday by its organizers.

Fox News Channel and the South Carolina Republican Party cosponsored the first GOP debate of the 2012 presidential race. The sponsors barred still photographers from entering the hall in Greenville during the debate.

That is a change from past debates, when Fox permitted still photographers greater access.

"The opening stages of an event as important as the presidential selection process should be as accessible as possible to all forms of journalism," said Michael Oreskes, the AP's senior managing editor.

Fox told the AP and Reuters that it would allow one still photographer into the debate at the start, when candidates shake hands, and that the photographer had to leave when the debate began.

State GOP executive director Joel Sawyer said there had been limits on photography in the past and that the event would be seen by many even without photographers present.
