Phillies Notes: Phillies put Brian Schneider on disabled list

CLEARWATER, Fla. - As expected, the Phillies placed catcher Brian Schneider on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a strained left hamstring.

Schneider was injured rounding third base in the fifth inning of Wednesday' 5-3 win over Florida. The Phillies will announce a corresponding move before Friday's opener in Atlanta, but it is almost certain that catcher Carlos Ruiz will be activated from the disabled list.

Schneider is the 10th Phillies player to go on the disabled list since the beginning of the season. After the game Wednesday, he was anticipating an absence.

"It's not good," he said of the hamstring.

Schneider would have scored on a Cliff Lee single up the middle in the fifth. Marlins centerfielder Chris Coghlan wasn't even going to attempt a throw to home until he saw Schneider limping back to third.

Schneider was hitting .173 (9 for 52) with two home runs in 16 games.

Dane Sardinha replaced Schneider on Wednesday and will serve as the backup catcher for at least another 15 days. He is 3 for 13 with two runs scored in six games.

Brown out

Top prospect Domonic Brown, playing at triple-A Lehigh Valley, left Wednesday's game and sat out Thursday with a sprained right thumb. The Phillies say that the injury is "mild" and that Brown will miss two to four days.

Brown is closely watched in the minors because of the lack of production in right field from Ben Francisco. The 23-year-old is 19 for 53 in 14 minor-league games since returning from a broken hamate bone on his right hand.

The hamate bone is on the opposite part of the hand from the thumb.

Brown has a 16-game hitting streak for the IronPigs dating from last season. In nine games this year with Lehigh Valley, he has three outfield assists.

He was 1 for 4 Wednesday with a run and an RBI before being removed in the middle of the ninth.
