McCloskey starred for the Lions girls; Smalley helped pace Crusaders.

Posted: May 15, 2011

Anna McCloskey was banking on having a big day.

In what would be her final Philadelphia Catholic League track and field meet, the Cardinal O'Hara senior didn't want to spoil the four-year run.

After all, O'Hara had won three consecutive girls' outdoor league championships while McCloskey had been a near-automatic winner in the discus and shot put over the years.

"I can't imagine not winning my senior year," McCloskey said. "That kind of wasn't an option this year. We already decided."

McCloskey and O'Hara overwhelmed the field Saturday at Upper Darby, capturing their seventh Catholic girls' title in the last eight years with a team score of 125 points. Archbishop Prendergast was runner-up with 88 points.

McCloskey was a winner in both the shot put and discus, and earned the girls' field MVP award. Her discus throw of 120 feet, 5.5 inches broke the Catholic League record of 117-11, set by Prendergast's Sharon Wallace in 1978.

"I was counting on breaking it, and that made it even better," McCloskey said. "And I knew if I didn't that I would be disappointed in myself. I wouldn't have cared what I threw."

Father Judge, buoyed by dominating performances in the field events in particular, won its first boys' track and field league title since 2008 with 135 points. The O'Hara boys took second with 108.

Judge's Matt Smalley, a junior, was named the boys' track MVP after winning both the 100-meter (11.28) and 200-meter (22.31) dashes. Smalley added bronze medals in the long jump and triple jump.

Judge led from wire to wire after Sean McPeak won the javelin (176-11/2) in the day's opening event. Judge's John Landis won the triple jump (45-1), and a host of other field athletes finished in the top six to earn the Crusaders points and build a lead that they sustained throughout the day.

"Our strength is in the field," Judge coach Mike Leonard said. ". . . We preach team, team, team. We preach depth, depth, depth."

O'Hara's Chazz Wilks, a junior, won both the shot put (52-51/4) and discus (168-6) for the third consecutive year on his way to boys' field MVP honors. Archbishop Carroll's Katie Rodden was named girls' track MVP, winning both the mile (5:06.73) and 3,200 (11:08.83).

O'Hara girls placed runners in the top six of every track event, thus earning at least one team point, except for the 200 dash. Before the track events even began Saturday, they held 50 points earned from field events, anchored by McCloskey's record-breaking day.

John McShay, O'Hara girls' coach, deferred all credit to his assistants and athletes, even though, since assuming the team helm in 2004, McShay has led his Lions to the league crown in every season but one.

"I've been blessed with getting good runners, good athletes," McShay said. ". . . I'm just proud and happy for the girls. I like to see them do well. I like to see them achieve."

And though the championships have come in bunches, if you ask McCloskey, who will throw at Auburn or Virginia Tech next season, if winning Catholic League plaques ever gets old, she answers poignantly:

"It's better than losing."
