Oscar S. Schermer, 77, a retired lawyer, formerly of Huntingdon Valley, died of pneumonia Sunday, May 15, at Dresher Estates, an assisted-living facility.

Mr. Schermer grew up in Northeast Philadelphia and graduated from Olney High School.

After graduating in 1955 from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, he served in the Army. He was assigned to a ski patrol in Colorado, though he had never skied, and was later stationed in France, said a daughter, Stephanie Richman.

After his discharge, he graduated at the top of his class from Temple University School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review. He then joined his father, Charles, in his law office in Center City. When his father died in 1961, he established Oscar S. Schermer & Associates, a general-law practice in Center City. He retired in 2007.

Since 1968, he had been married to Karen Kooperman Schermer. They were introduced by her father. The two men kept fishing boats moored next to each other at the Jersey Shore.

Mr. Schermer loved deep-sea fishing and realized a longtime dream when, for his 50th birthday, he fished off the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, his daughter said. He was also a devoted Phillies fan and attended Phillies Dream Week in Clearwater for his 65th birthday, she said.

Mr. Schermer was a member of the Philadelphia Variety Club, the Golden Slipper Club, the Rotary Club of Philadelphia, and the 32 Karat Club, a social group.

Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by daughters Jamie Adler and Catherine; a sister, Roselyn Marion; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at Goldsteins' Rosenberg's Raphael-Sacks Memorial Chapel, 310 Second Street Pike, Southampton. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Trevose.

Donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 399 Market St., Suite 102, Philadelphia 19106.
