The director says he is preparing for a fall release of "Barrel of a Gun," his film about the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal and the 1981 murder of Philadephia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner.
Bloomquist expecting a baby
And the big story on "Action News" is congratulations to anchor/reporter Sarah Bloomquist, who's expecting a baby this fall.
It's the first child for Bloomquist, who joined 6ABC in 2002, and her significant other, Justin Shaginaw, a physical therapist.
Good luck, Larry
Best wishes to Larry McMullen, once a Daily News must-read columnist, who goes in for surgery today at Camden's Cooper Hospital to correct two abdominal aortic aneurysms.
McMullen, 77, retired in 1993, and does freelance writing when he isn't at the race track.
Today is step one in a two-step surgery, says his daughter Coleen.
McMullen often wrote about his five daughters, and they're asking friends and readers for their prayers.
Cards can be sent to Larry at 3060 Bristol Road, Apt. 267, Bensalem, Pa., 19020. His email address is firstname.lastname@example.org.
Out and about
Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer, stars of TNT's "Franklin & Bash," which premieres June 1, dined at Buddakan (325 Chestnut) Thursday night before a Dave & Buster's (325 N. Columbus) screening party for the show, hosted by 93.3 WMMR's Casey Boy.
Earlier Thursday, sandwich mogul Tony Luke Jr., an actor himself, hosted Gosselaar, remembered by a generation as Zack Morris of "Saved by the Bell," and "Road Trip" star Meyer at his sports bar, where they sampled cheesesteaks, roast pork and chicken sandwiches.
Meyer's wife, by the way, is Abington native Deborah Kaplan, who directed him in "Can't Hardly Wait," which she also co-wrote.
Mikey Wild in hospice
Mikey Wild, the old-school Philly punk-musician-turned marker artist, is in hospice care at Penn Medicine at Rittenhouse, says his brother Ben DeLuca.
Wild, born Michael DeLuca, has had lung cancer for nearly three years.
He recently completed a short film with producer/director Issac Williams called "Paying the Price," and played some shows last year while in remission."Being mentally challenged, Mikey found his niche in life early on and made the most of it," Ben said yesterday.
"And isn't it ironic that he'll spend his last days on South Street where it all started for him in the late '70s, early '80s," his brother noted, pointing out that Penn Medicine at Rittenhouse is at 18th & South.
Wild, who's biggest song was "I Was Punk B4 U Were Punk," is still known to many as the Mayor of South Street.
'Bachelorette' not a dentist, yet
Ashley Hebert, who debuted last night as ABC's "Bachelorette," did not graduate from Penn dental school May 16 as had been expected. Hebert was listed in the program but did not attend the ceremony, nor has she actually completed her studies, sources tell us.
A Penn spokeswoman said the university does not comment about students and declined to say if and when Hebert, among the final three contestants on the last season of "The Bachelor," is expected to graduate.
Hebert told the Portland Press Herald in her native Maine that she took time off from school but intends to soon become a dentist.
Navy SEALs fundraiser tonight
Navy SEALs definitely got a PR boost after whacking Osama bin Laden a few weeks ago, and tonight the Irish Pub (20th & Walnut) hosts a benefit for the Navy SEAL Foundation called "Thank the SEALs."
The 6 p.m. party costs $5 to enter, and the door charge and a portion of drink sales benefit SEAL families.
Comcast SportsNet's Gregg Murphy hosts the event, at which Miss Philadelphia Maria Sciorillo will sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" and former SEALs will serve as bartenders, including Jeff Webb and Tony Sanchez, who host a Proud to Serve military fundraiser annually at the Irish Pub.
Tips, T-shirt sales and charity-auction items will benefit the Navy SEAL Foundation.
Kidd Chris on Stern today
Former 94 WYSP host Kidd Chris will be on "The Howard Stern Show" this morning on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio promoting his new album, "The Philly Years: Vol. 1," which is out now on iTunes and Amazon.com.
Fear not, Stern fans, he's calling in and will not be riding the Sybian.
