Throughout this year's mayoral campaign, Republican candidate Karen Brown has been listed as 49 years old. She will celebrate her birthday a week from Thursday, June 9, and the city's voter-registration records suggest it will be a big one, her 50th.
Except she's already 50, about to turn 51, she says.
"The voter registration has it wrong," Brown said last week. "They list the year as 1961. It should be 1960. I just never got it fixed. People make mistakes when they type things up. . . . I've got a birth certificate somewhere, but it never seemed important."
With an unusual attempt at delicacy, a reporter asked Brown if she possibly had gone along with the error, wanting to appear younger than she is.
