Jill acts locally

Posted: June 21, 2011

Her career has taken her from Broad and Lehigh to Botswana. Still, Jill Scott isn't known as "Jilly from Philly" for nothing. When she's back in town, the soulful singer-songwriter makes a point to support local businesses, organizations and kids every chance she gets. Here, some of her hometown faves:

Hair

The Grammy winner's signature curls are naturally perfected by Syreeta Scott (no relation), stylist and owner of East Falls' holistic-chic Duafe Salon. 3502 Scotts Lane, Suite 29, 267-297-7636, dua-fe.com.

Face

Makeup artist Meredith Sabir gave the artist's god-given good looks a fresh yet glam edge for a December 2010 fund-raiser for Scott's Blues Babe Foundation, which assists nearby minority students with college expenses. Meredithsabir.com.

Party space

The Blues Babe Foundation's fund-raiser took place at Material Culture, a 60,000-square-foot warehouse of spectacular carpets and other far-flung finds (Turkish copper cauldrons, Indonesian root benches). It's a favorite shopping destination among Scott's friends. 4700 Wissahickon Ave., 215-849-8030, materialculture.com.

Rec center

The North Philly gal helped prevent her old neighborhood's rec center from closing by buying it a new roof, floor and basketball court. She even recorded her new album's first video there for the single "Shame." Also in the video: fellow hometown honey Eve. Cecil B. Moore Recreation Center, 2551 N. 22nd St., 215-685-9755.

Arm candy

Just around the corner from some of her very first performance spaces is on-trend accessories boutique J. Karma, where the songstress has completed her look with a chic handbag by Sondra Roberts. 62 N. 3rd St., 215-627-9625, jkarmaboutique.com.

Coffee, tea

Old City's charming Café Olé is one of The Lady Jill Scott's must-stop spots for a quick pick-me-up. (We recommend the home-brewed ice tea with fresh mint.) 147 N. 3rd St., 215-627-2140.

R&R

This poetic princess of soul has sought solace in Reiki, an energetic form of mind-body healing, from South Philly-based Ayurvedic consultant and lifestyle expert Denise Baron, founder of Ayurveda for Modern Living. Ayurvedaformodernliving.com.
