Coronado is our Player of the Year in connection with the 34th annual Daily News All-City Team, which includes players from the Public, Catholic and Inter-Ac leagues. He hit .589, with eight doubles, two triples and three homers while posting 28 RBI and going 19-for-19 on steal attempts.
In the semis, played at Richie Ashburn Field (major league dimensions), he went 3-for-4 with a double and two homers for four RBI. In the final (same site), strong winds almost certainly prevented two more homers that would have netted six RBI.
Also, in a quarterfinal, which happened to be his first lifetime pitching start, the Dominican Republic native allowed one hit and fanned 10 in a five-inning outing.
Coronado will attend Keystone College, which is coming off an appearance in the Division III World Series, where the Giants lost in the semifinals.
Our Pitcher of the Year is junior lefthander Joey Gorman, of Ss. Neumann-Goretti.
While leading the Saints to the Catholic League title and a 22-1 overall record, the 5-10, 180-pound Gorman went 9-1, with a 1.00 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 54 innings. Thanks to two starts and a relief stint, he earned all of N-G's playoff wins, while going 15 total frames. Overall in the postseason, he posted a 1.59 ERA, with 21 K's and nine walks.
Gorman also starred as a centerfielder and No. 2 hitter, posting a .484 average with 23 RBI.
