An unauthorized street party at a city recreation center near 33rd and Diamond streets, in Strawberry Mansion, erupted in gunfire last night, and a young man in his 20s was killed, police said.

Three others - including a 6-year-old girl, a 10-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl - were also wounded in the melee. Authorities said that all were in critical but stable condition at Temple University Hospital.

As recounted by police, about 200 people gathered in front of the recreation center for the illegal party, and alcohol was served.

At some point, a group of boys attacked another boy, who then went home, got a gun and came back and fired into the crowd, police said.

Police said that the shooting may have been linked to an earlier shooting last night near 33rd and Sargent streets. A black car was spotted at both incidents.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said that the dead man, who was shot several times in the head, may have been the target.

Derrick Ford, director of the Strawberry Mansion Athletic Association, said that the party was not sanctioned by the Department of Recreation.

"This is the reason we don't have basketball games, because, historically, they have a culture that brings on a whole negative side," he said.

Police were questioning several people last night, but no arrests had been made.
