Dan Gross: Bam: Don't drink & drive

June 29, 2011|By Dan Gross

"THIS DEFINITELY woke me up. Coming from a 'Jackass,' I recommend to everybody, don't get behind the wheel if you've been drinking. Just don't," Bam Margera said yesterday on 93.3 WMMR's Preston & Steve show.

His wake-up call, of course, was the death last week of his best friend and "Jackass" co-star Ryan Dunn, killed after crashing into a tree while drunkenly driving his Porsche about 130 mph on Route 322 in West Goshen Township.

"Whenever you're drunk you think you're not. If you even drink at all, don't get behind the wheel," said Margera, who sent mixed messages on the radio show because a few minutes earlier he said "I would never drink and drive from now on. I might have a beer or two or whatever, but I would never officially drink and drive."

Story continues below.

Last week Margera attacked film critic Roger Ebert for tweeting "Friends don't let jackasses drink and drive," hours after Dunn's death was reported. Margera attacked Ebert again yesterday on the radio show without acknowledging that Ebert was right, even if his comments came too soon and sounded hurtful.

Margera admitted that Dunn was "always a full-blown nut in a car," and that on one Lamborghini race "I had to hold both handles tensing up the whole time cause he drives like such a maniac."

Margera, the Chester County skateboarder turned daredevil, said he thought his cellphone was going to explode from so many text messages of sympathy, including one from Brad Pitt.

Margera said he's not sure about the fate of "Moustache Riders," a film planned for him, Dunn, Johnny Knoxville and Willie Nelson, but he hopes it still will be made with another actor.

* Speaking of Preston & Steve, 93.3 WMMR's Jacky Bam Bam met up with Def Leppard singer Joe Elliot and drummer Rick Allen before the group's show at the Susquehanna Bank Center to give the band a plaque for supporting Preston & Steve's American Red Cross Blood Drive.
