Letters: GOP group that backed Corbett defends its activities

July 05, 2011

THE JUNE 29 opinion piece "How a Natural-gas Tycoon Tapped into Corbett" mischaracterizes the Republican State Leadership Committee and uses partial facts to draw incorrect conclusions.

The RSLC is proud to have supported candidate Tom Corbett as part of our stated mission of electing Republicans to the office of attorney general, lieutenant governor, secretary of state and state legislator.

With more than 100,000 donors from all 50 states, the RSLC is hardly "obscure." The RSLC has maintained a presence in Pennsylvania and will continue to do so.

Story continues below.

During the last election cycle, we spent more than $31 million across the country, devoting nearly $1 million in Pennsylvania House races, including targeting and winning three of the toughest races in the state: Districts 39, 54 and 130.

The RSLC will continue to focus on recruiting commonsense conservative candidates and providing them with research, financial support and other kinds of assistance, all within bounds of state law.

Will Bunch's June 29 piece on Gov. Corbett's natural-gas connections represents the atrophying of our governance to an oligarchy of rich white men elected to preserve the interests of other rich white men.

Endorsing this devolution is a Supreme Court that recently ruled that public money used to finance a non-gazillionaire-candidate running against a gazillionaire candidate with limitless fiscal resources is a violation of the First Amendment (Arizona Free Enterprise Club case).

This from the same Supreme Court that ruled corporations can contribute as much as they want to the candidate of their choosing (Citizens United).

Because it's bad for business, campaign-finance reform will never be a reality, particularly with an ideologically divided, right-leaning Supreme Court stomping all state efforts. Sadly, it's the citizenry that suffers.

Ree-Lee great!

What an unbe-LEE-vable month of June for Cliff Lee! Not only did he win three-in-a-row-complete-game shutouts, but he also tied the record with Phillies pitcher Robin Roberts from 1950.

This is an exciting time to be a Phillies fan! I see another parade in the future for the best team in all of baseball - Our Fightin' Phils!

Can't we all get along?

Re the Irish vs. black history debate:

I must have missed the letter that started this barrage of "hurt-felt" replies about "our" culture. My question: Can we agree we all had it hard? That we all want it better? That we all have to work together to ensure a positive productive future for our children? Are we there yet?

A mob by any other name

I read that Philadelphia officials don't want these groups to be called "flash mobs." Does it really matter? Should it be "unruly youth" or "misguided young folks"? Does softening the terminology somehow diminish their crimes? Why can't they be called and treated like the criminals they are? Philly - what a mess!
