Letters: Mentoring is rewarding, and mentors are needed

Posted: July 06, 2011

Volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern Pennsylvania has changed my life forever. I never understood how powerful volunteering was until I became a Big Sister, and my "Little," Jannah, became a part of my world.

I can't begin to count how many times my Little has helped me just as much as I have helped her. Tears came to my eyes when she graduated with all A's and B's and won the Principal's Award.

I am working on my B.A. in business communications at Chestnut Hill College, and every semester I do some sort of project in connection with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the positive impact they have on the community. This has become my way of getting the word out about mentoring and the impact it can have on the lives of so many children, and also on those who volunteer their time and financial support. Hundreds of children are on the waiting lists. So I urge everyone to consider becoming a mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters is an awesome organization. My only regret is not becoming an active member sooner.
