Man sought in death of guard kills himself

RICHMOND, Va. - A Pemberton, N.J., man sought in the slaying of a woman early Tuesday killed himself later in the day outside the Richmond Greyhound bus station as a federal marshal approached him, authorities said.

Kevin Connolly of the U.S. Marshals Service's fugitive task force said the suspect pointed a gun at the marshal before shooting himself.

Richmond police identified the man as 21-year-old Allen Barron. He was wanted in the slaying of 37-year-old Katrina Owens, an off-duty corrections officer from Monmouth Junction, Middlesex County.

Connolly said the marshal who recognized Barron sought cover and pulled his weapon but did not fire.

Owens, a married mother of three, worked at the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton, the Star-Ledger reported. The paper cited Newark's acting police director, Samuel DeMaio, as saying Owens was apparently involved in a romantic relationship with Barron.

She was at a barbecue with Barron when the two became involved in a dispute, DeMaio said. The fight spilled outside the Columbia Street party, where Owens was shot and killed, he said.
