Sports in Brief: U.S. stays alive in Davis Cup

Brothers Bob and Mike Bryan earned the United States its first point of a Davis Cup quarterfinal against Spain on Saturday, keeping the Americans alive with a doubles victory over Marcel Granollers and Fernando Verdasco, in Austin, Texas.

The No. 1 doubles team in the world dropped the first set before earning a 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Spain leads, two matches to one, heading into Sunday's singles matches.

France secured a spot in the Davis Cup semifinals when Michael Llodra and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga swept the doubles in straight sets in Stuttgart to give their team an unassailable, 3-0 lead over Germany.

France will play either Spain or the United States.

Slovenia's Polona Hercog beat Johanna Larsson of Sweden 6-4, 7-5 to win the Swedish Open in Bastad.

Top-seeded John Isner will play Olivier Rochus in the final at the Hall of Fame championship in Newport, R.I. Isner advanced with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory over Tobais Kamke. Rochus beat Michael Yani, 6-2, 6-4.

HORSE RACING: St. John's River closed with a rush to win the $300,000 Delaware Oaks for 3-year-old fillies by a head over Strike the Moon.

The Oaks was the third of three major races at Delaware Park. Awesome Bet caught JW Blue at the wire to win the Barbaro Stakes for 3-year-old colts, and Cheetah drew away near the finish to win the Robert G. Dick Memorial for 3-years-and-older fillies and mares by a length and three-quarters.

HOCKEY: The Minnesota Wild signed defenseman and Minnesota native Mike Lundin to a one-year deal.

BOXING: Romanian-born Lucian Bute (29-0), who now fights out of Canada, retained his IBF super middleweight title by knocking out Jean-Paul Mendy (29-1-1) of France in the fourth round in Bucharest.

SOCCER: Cesar Eduardo Gonzalez scored in the second half to help Venezuela defeat Ecuador, 1-0, in Salta, Argentina, to take first place in Group B at the Copa America. Brazil and Paraguay drew, 2-2, in Cordoba.

Dwayne De Rosario scored in the 61st minute to lift D.C. United to a 1-0 win over the host New York Red Bulls in MLS. . . . Danny Cruz and Geoff Cameron scored to lead the Houston Dynamo to a 2-0 win over visiting Toronto FC. . . . Omar Bravo scored on a header in the third minute of second-half stoppage time, lifting Sporting Kansas City to a 1-1 draw with visiting Chivas USA.

NOTEWORTHY: Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward was arrested early Saturday outside Atlanta on a drunken driving charge, sheriff's officials said. An official of the DeKalb County jail said Ward was released on $1,300 bond. Atlanta lawyer Andrew Ree issued a statement saying the 35-year-old Ward was not impaired while driving.
