Letters: Two perspectives on the 'flash mob' violence in Philadelphia

Posted: July 11, 2011

ONE THING missing from the reporting of the flash-mob phenomenon apparently sweeping the nation is that the participants seem to be exclusively black and the victims are white. Instead, the liberal media uses terms like "marauding teens," "large group of young people" and "youth mob" in describing the criminals. The offenses should be treated as hate crimes since whites are being singled out because of their color. Certainly, if the colors were reversed, it would be presented as an entirely different story.

Rep. Jewell Williams was couldn't believe a mob actually began at his peaceful Susquehanna festival. But he seems to think that by not calling them "flash mobs," it will turn these punks into model citizens.

YOU NEVER read about teen mobs assaulting patrons at sidewalk cafes in Texas. Do folks in Philly ever wonder why? I never go to a restaurant, or almost any other place for that matter, without a pistol in my pocket.

Down here in Texas, the thugs are keenly aware that in any public venue there will be several private citizens carrying concealed weapons. You may not like guns (I don't really like them, either), but you have to admit their presence in the hands of law-abiding citizens tends help bad people behave themselves in public.

When violence looms and every second counts, the police are only minutes away! In Philadelphia, that's what the thugs are counting on.
