Penn State adds football recruit, loses another

Penn State has added one verbal commitment and lost another for the Class of 2012.

Nyeem Wartman, a linebacker from Valley View High in Archbald, Pa., committed to Penn State over the weekend after visiting campus.

"It's a great place for me to not only develop my athletic skills, but to also help me in developing as a man," the 6-3, 220-pound Wartman told the Times-Tribune of Scranton. "They really teach you lessons about life and get you ready for the real world. It's not just about football."

Wartman posted 115 tackles last season, including 10 for loss. He also reportedly had offers from Rutgers, Florida, North Carolina State, Boston College, Connecticut, Syracuse, Illinois, Northwestern, Pittsburgh, Villanova, Akron and Temple. He is the 31st-ranked linebacker in the nation, according to Rivals.com.

The Nittany Lions also lost a recruit, at least for now, when defensive lineman Jarron Jones decommitted following a visit to Notre Dame.

Jones, from Aquinas in Rochester, N.Y., said Penn State remains in consideration but that he also is looking at the Irish, North Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Jones, ranked seventh in the nation at his position by Rivals.com, had been considered by some recruiting experts as having given a "soft verbal" to Penn State.

"It was really a better way for me to explore my options," Jones told WQAM-TV. "All four schools have an equal chance at me and we'll see where we go from there.

"I talked to the coaches, they were upset about it but they won't stop recruiting me. We talked and everybody's on the same page, though."
