Baseball Notes: Mets trade K-Rod to Milwaukee

Posted: July 13, 2011

NEW YORK - The New York Mets traded closer Francisco Rodriguez to the Milwaukee Brewers for two players to be named.

The deal was announced right after the All-Star Game ended Tuesday night.

The Mets also sent cash to Milwaukee. The Brewers are tied with St. Louis for the NL Central lead, helped by closer John Axford's 23 saves.

The Mets (46-45) are 11 games behind the Phillies (57-34) in the NL East, and 71/2 games behind the second-place Atlanta Braves (54-38).

Safety review ordered. Major-league teams are reviewing stadium safety following the death of a fan at a Texas Rangers game last week, while still encouraging players to toss balls into the stands.

Shannon Stone, a 39-year-old attending a Rangers game in Texas last week with his 6-year-old son, fell over a railing while trying to catch a ball flipped to the stands by Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton.

Each team determines its own ballpark safety features based on local laws.

Rivera sent to L.A.

Toronto traded outfielder Juan Rivera to the Dodgers in exchange for a player to be named or cash. The 33-year-old appeared in 70 games for the Blue Jays, batting .243 with six home runs and 27 RBIs before being designated for assignment on July 3.
