Union to host benefit soccer game

As the Union's chief executive officer and operating partner, Nick Sakiewicz gets to pull rank, which might explain why he will be in the starting lineup for Friday's inaugural River Cup Challenge, 6:30 p.m. at PPL Park.

This unique event will pit the Union management in a benefit soccer game against the Sons of Ben supporters club. To the victor goes the coveted River Cup. But as Sakiewicz points out, the true winner will be Chester United, a soccer club the Union started for the youth of Chester, which has approximately 600 members.

Tickets for the event are $10, and patrons can expect to see Sakiewicz in the starting lineup as a central defender. Never mind that he is a former professional goalkeeper, he has earned - or actually taken - the starting spot on defense.

"I am wearing shin guards on both sides," he quipped.

While the sides have engaged in some good-natured ribbing, Sakiewicz took time to get serious in praising his opponent.

"Through the generosity of our fan club it has been tremendous to put all our resources and passion together to raise money for a great cause to reinvest in our community," Sakiewicz said.

In a not-so-surprising announcement, Union team manager Peter Nowak will serve as player-coach of the Union team.

When asked if Nowak had the qualifications to be a coach of the team, Sakiewicz said: "I am not sure he has the qualifications nor the stomach."

More laughter ensued, but make no mistake, raising money for a worthwhile cause is a serious matter for both sides.
