It's not Lidge's night in outing at Trenton

TRENTON - Brad Lidge tried to look at the positives in what was a disappointing rehabilitation appearance with the Reading Phillies in Thursday's 9-5 loss to the Trenton Thunder.

Entering the game in the seventh inning, Lidge had trouble commanding his slider and fastball and departed after getting just two outs. He threw 28 pitches and allowed two runs, both earned. The righthander surrendered one hit and one walk, hit two batters, and threw three wild pitches.

Lidge said his fastball topped out at 89-90 m.p.h., which he said was the best of his five rehab outings. He is coming back from shoulder problems and has yet to pitch this season for the Phillies.

"Nothing hurt," Lidge said, citing the biggest positive. "I felt my fastball is the best it's been, but my control wasn't very good."

That was an understatement.

This was Lidge's second rehab outing for Reading. On Monday, he threw a scoreless inning in a 7-6 win over Trenton. He struck out two and threw 13 pitches.

In three appearances for single-A Lakewood, pitching three innings, he allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out four.

Lidge is scheduled to make three more rehab appearances. He said he would pitch Saturday and Sunday for Reading at Trenton, and then he believes he will pitch Wednesday at Lakewood.

Lidge is aiming to join the Phillies for their home series against the San Diego Padres beginning next Friday.

"That is my goal, and it's definitely realistic, but I have to make sure I have better control than I had tonight," Lidge said. "But otherwise I feel good."

The former World Series hero said he had no idea what his role would be with the Phils.

"The way I view it, I want to let Charlie [Manuel] know I am healthy to throw any time in the game he wants me to throw," Lidge said.
