Eve of destruction Though it may now seem a relic of the era of mutual assured destruction, the 1964 thriller Fail-Safe was released just two years after the Cuban Missile Crisis, at a time when reminders of the bristling nuclear arsenals the United States and Soviet Union had aimed at each other haunted nearly every moment. In Sidney Lumet's classic, a computer malfunction launches an errant bomber at Moscow, leaving the American president (Henry Fonda, at his best) with an escalating series of difficult decisions to make. The film screens at 2 p.m. at the Colonial Theatre, 227 Bridge St., Phoenixville. Tickets are $8. Call 610-9117-1228.

Independent voice Vagabond pop perfectionist Cass McCombs enlivens the retro sounds of his musicological explorations with the unexpected (for example, a guest vocal by 1970s icon Karen Black). But the intent of downbeat tunes is clear: While we while away the down times, let's dance. He plays at Johnny Brenda's, 1201 N. Frankford Ave. Tickets are $13. Call 215-739-9684.
