Lebanon County house granted landmark status

July 28, 2011

A colonial-era structure in Lebanon County is among four new National Historic Landmarks announced Wednesday by U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

The Alexander Schaeffer House in Schaefferstown, Heidelberg Township, is a rare intact example of a colonial-era building in the Pennsylvania German architectural tradition, according to the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service. Preservation officials said it might be the nation's only surviving Weinbauernhaus, a building that served as both a residence and a distillery.

The other newly designated landmarks are a pre-Columbian flint quarry in Dunn Center, N.D.; a 20th-century Northwest-style house in Portland, Ore.; and the Platt Historic District in Sulphur, Okla. - Inquirer staff
