Tattle: Amy's gone but she left some music behind

Posted: July 29, 2011

Amy Winehouse may no longer be alive to record new music, but that doesn't mean there won't be new music.

To the surprise of no one, Amy had recorded unreleased material, but people close to her say no decision has been made as to whether it will be released.

Oh, it will be released.

If Amy left behind a recording of chalk on a blackboard, it would be released.

It's not clear how finished the tracks are but the Guardian newspaper yesterday quoted an unnamed spokesman "close to" Amy's record label as saying she had left the "framework" of about a dozen songs.

Producer Salaam Remi, who worked on both Winehouse albums - "Frank" and "Back to Black" - and was involved with her new material, told DJ Kim Kane of New York's Power 105.1 that there were not large amounts of finished material and that Winehouse's estate had yet to approve the release of anything.

"We had a lot of things going. There are recordings, but first things first, I think," he said. "We're trying to focus on what's at hand and what her family wants to do."

At least for now, there would certainly be an appetite for new material. Sales of Amy's music have soared since her death Saturday. In the U.S., digital sales of her tracks have risen by 2,000 percent in the past week, according to Nielsen Soundscan. Britain's Official Charts Company said it looks like she will have seven songs in this week's top 40, which is announced Sunday.

One track that should see the light of day is a version of the Billie Holiday pop standard "Body and Soul" that Amy recorded in March with Tony Bennett for a forthcoming duets album.

In a sad, ironic twist, Billie was arrested for drug possession in her hospital room while she lay dying at the too-young age of 44.

Lady Gaga will release a book of photographs with fashion photographer Terry Richardson.

Grand Central Publishing announced yesterday that it will release "Lady Gaga" on Nov. 22. The book will include more than 350 color and B&W photos of Gaga.

Simon & Schuster announced yesterday that it had acquired Linda Ronstadt's autobiography, "Heart Like a Wheel," named after her Grammy-winning album.

Juice in the book, due in 2013, may come from Linda's high-profile romances with California Gov. Jerry Brown and George Lucas.

Director Paul Feig conceded to the Hollywood Reporter that there's a sense of inevitability about a Judd Apatow-produced "Bridesmaids 2."

"The minute you make a movie that does very well, studios want to do another one," he said.

Like with every sequel, everyone would only want to do it if it can be just as good as the first one.

And of course it won't be.

Billboard.com reports that Young Jeezy's summer tour will play the Theatre of the Living Arts in Philadelphia on Aug. 7.

His new album "TM103" will drop in the fall.

Old Spice spokesman Isaiah Mustafa has held off an effort by Fabio to become "the new Old Spice Guy."

In a series of videos ending yesterday, the muscular pitchmen dueled, responding to challenges from one another or viewers. They held staring and whistling contests, bantered and offered advice on working out and on writing love letters.

P&G said Mustafa won based on consumer feedback such as "likes" and online comments.

Typically, the most common online comment about the battle was, "It's Obama's fault."
