Two-time defending champion Penn has been selected the preseason favorite to win the Ivy League football title.

The Quakers received 12 of 17 votes from media members. It was the first time Penn, which has won 15 consecutive Ivy games, was voted No. 1 since 2005.

About the difficulty of being two-time defending champions, Quakers coach Al Bagnoli said: "You have to be careful in how you put that. You don't want to make it seem like a burden on your back every play. It's a different cast, and we approach it differently.

"We want to take the emphasis of knowing we'll be taking everybody's best shot, and being prepared to do that. We don't want to be paralyzed because we have won back-to-back, and how hard is it to win a third in a row? We'll give it our best try, we'll see what happens. I think our kids have handled it pretty well so far."

The Quakers return 32 letterwinners, including eight All-Ivy honorees. Three starters return from the Ivy's top-ranked offense and four from the league's top-ranked defense.

"Our kids are pretty focused and I think they're going in with a pretty good attitude," Bagnoli said. "We know the challenges will be there, the league will be very improved. We know we have a very difficult road schedule with trips to Dartmouth, to Brown, to Harvard."

The Quakers open the season at Franklin Field against Lafayette on Sept. 17. Preseason practice opens Aug. 22.
