A Philadelphia police officer is under investigation after a woman reported that he sexually assaulted her while on duty early Thursday, sources said.

The officer's name has not been released, but sources said he works in the West Philadelphia-based 18th District.

The department's Public Affairs Unit would confirm only that the Special Victims Unit and Internal Affairs were investigating the officer over alleged improper conduct while on duty.

The woman has not been identified. Police said she was in her 30s.

Police sources said the woman told police that the officer picked her up in his patrol car near 52d and Market Streets. She reported that the officer assaulted her after driving a short distance.

The woman reported the alleged assault before dawn Thursday and was interviewed by police.

The officer's patrol car was processed as a possible crime scene, police said.
