Richard Meyers, 60, of Springfield, Delaware County, a project manager for International Business Machines Corp. and a coach, died of complications from surgery Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

For the last 15 years, Mr. Meyers had been a project manager for IBM. Before that, he worked in computer maintenance for Total System Services Inc. in New York City and for Automatic Data Processing Inc. in North Jersey.

Mr. Meyers grew up in Clifton Heights. After graduating from Cardinal O'Hara High School, he attended Delaware County Community College, where he met Mary Jane Santangelo. They married in 1976.

He was a welder for Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. in Chester for several years until 1982. He then studied computer technology at Control Data Institute in Philadelphia and switched careers.

Mr. Meyers and his wife raised a family in Springfield. For 20 years until last season, he coached the Catholic Youth Organization football teams at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Springfield.

He golfed every Thursday in a league at Springfield Country Club; fished with friends in Canada every September; and was an avid fan of Penn State football.

His pride and joy were his four children and grandson, his daughter Meghan said. "We called him Poppy, and so did our friends," she said.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Meyers is survived by a daughter, Mackenzie; sons Zachary and Ryan; his parents, Edward and Dorothy Meyers; two brothers; a sister; and a grandson.

A Funeral Mass will be said at noon Friday, Aug. 19, at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, 651 Springfield Rd., Springfield, Pa. 19064. Friends may call from 10 a.m.

Donations may be made to the Holy Cross CYO football program.
