How much rain, wind did your town get?

Posted: August 29, 2011

The stats about rain and wind from Hurricane Irene reveal a couple of surprises.

No gust recorded in the region reached hurricane strength, which is 75 m.p.h. The strongest were the 71s measured in Cape May and Florence, Burlington County, on Sunday afternoon, according to a batch of figures released by the National Weather Service.

Also, the drenching was remarkable all across the region - even though the hurricane's eye hugged the coast then made landfall there.

Topping the list were Lafayette Hill in Montgomery County with 8.82 inches, and Somerdale in Camden County with 8.6. The highest at the Shore was 8.57 at one Atlantic County town.

Other counties also recording 8 inches or up: Northampton in Pennsylvania, Cumberland and Mercer in New Jersey, and New Castle County in Delaware.

Chester, Bucks and Burlington Counties each exceeded seven inches, while Berks, Gloucester, Salem and Delaware Counties all topped half a foot.

Philadelphia, Cape May County and Ocean County didn't.
