Philly's Jones will fight at the Garden

Posted: September 01, 2011

It won't be official for two weeks, but Mike Jones will make his debut at New York's Madison Square Garden on Dec. 3 against Argentine Sebastian Lujan. The welterweight bout will top the undercard for the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito rematch.

In June, the former Mount Airy resident remained undefeated at 25-0 with an easy second-round technical knockout of Raul Munoz at the Asylum Arena in South Philadelphia. Jones' promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, said the 28-year-old will be placed on a short list to face Manny Pacquiao in 2012.

The 31-year-old Lujan is 38-5-2. This will be his fourth fight of the year. He last defeated Mark Jason Melligen on July 1 in San Antonio, Texas.

The only problem is Lujan's ability to obtain a visa. If he is unable to do so, there presently is no backup plan. But Jones could be bounced to the undercard of the Pacquiao-Juan Marquez fight on Nov. 12 in Las Vegas, which also is being promoted by Top Rank.

Jones returned to the gym after a three-week layoff following minor surgery on his right knuckle, and he said the hand is still tender.
