Neshaminy rallies past Souderton

In the first half, when Souderton's wing-T offense was clicking on all cylinders and shredding Neshaminy's defense, it looked as if it would be a long opening night for the Redskins at Heartbreak Ridge.

But Neshaminy sorted things out at halftime, pretty much kept the Indians' once-unstoppable rushing attack in check, and managed a 20-13 victory Friday at Harry E. Franks Stadium in the nonleague opener for both teams.

The difference in a game dominated most of the way by visiting Souderton was Ron Smith's 87-yard catch and run early in the fourth quarter. The wideout took a short pass from Joe Bianchino, broke a tackle along the left sideline, and raced the remaining 75 yards for the winning score.

Neshaminy, ranked No. 4 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, won its third straight opener against No. 8 Souderton and improved to 3-1 in the short series.

Three of Bianchino's four completions went for touchdowns. The senior lefthander and first-year starter completed 4 of 8 passes for 192 yards.

In the first half, the Indians outgained the Redskins, 215-72. Javon White (nine carries for 56 yards), Joe McNamara (six for 46), and Tyler Scholl (10 for 39) combined for 141 of the team's 155 rushing yards. Tanner Allem completed 7 of 8 throws for 60 yards.

Despite its rushing efficiency, which sparked three clock-eating drives, Souderton led by only 13-7 at intermission.

Allem's 1-yard keeper with 7 minutes, 15 seconds remaining in the second quarter was the go-ahead score that capped an 11-play, 70-yard drive. Jeff Wolf's extra-point boot was blocked.

Late in the first quarter, Neshaminy wideout Bobby Marterella had taken a left-side slant pass from Bianchino and raced for a 69-yard TD to make it 7-7. He covered 66 yards after the catch.

On its second possession, Souderton had put together a nine-play, 70-yard series to take a 7-0 lead. White, headed for Villanova, scored on a 5-yard counter run.

White finished with 91 yards on 15 attempts; McNamara (12 for 60) and Scholl (13 for 56) were next in line.

Neshaminy won even though senior tailback Sean Ulmer, a 1,000-yard rusher last season, gained only 40 yards on 15 attempts.
