Barry, Pecora: Opponents now, teammates later

Alana Barry and Alex Pecora are opposing goalkeepers headed in the same direction.

Barry and most of her Eastern teammates have won three Group 4 state field hockey championships and are likely to pick up a fourth in November. Pecora and most of her Crusaders captured the Group 2 state title last November and have enough returning talent to do it again.

Both goalkeepers have committed to the University of Iowa, and both know each other from the club field hockey teams on which they play. They are friendly and courteous to each other; however, on Sept. 8, they will be directing their defenses to smother the opposition.

Story continues below.

For the second consecutive season, the two teams will be facing off in their season opener, a crossover game in the Olympic Conference. Last year, it was at Eastern, which is in the American Division, and the Vikings won. This time, the game is scheduled to be at the National Division's Eustace, at 6 p.m.

"It will be a game to watch," said Pecora, a junior and Spirit USA Club member. "I believe we do match up with them. We have speed, experience, lots of seniors and depth.

"Last year, we played a nice game and lost, 4-1, but it was a great opener for us that set the tone [for the season], and I'm glad it's going to happen again."

Barry, a senior, said she knows Pecora from Futures USA Field Hockey, an Olympic Development program, as well as tournaments in which they have participated with their club teams. But they never played against each other in club ball.

"Playing another state champion is good competition for both of us," said Barry, who also plays for Jersey Intensity. "We look forward to opening with them because last year it was a good game."

Danyle Heilig, the coach who has led the Vikings to 12 consecutive state championships, said she welcomes the chance to play against a state champion in the season opener.

Bishop Eustace coach Krissy Holak feels the same way.

"I embrace the game," said Holak, who cannot recall beating Eastern in her 20 years at Eustace. "We will walk away a better team playing against them. Like last year, Eastern gets you ready for November."

Holak added that the only way to beat the Vikings is to eliminate mistakes during crucial moments in the game, play hard for 60 minutes, execute, and not give up corners.
