President Obama on Saturday signed a Pennsylvania Disaster Declaration, making federal aid available to the Commonwealth to supplement state and local recovery efforts in certain counties affected by Hurricane Irene.

Chester County was among five counties where local governments and certain non-profit organizations were named as eligible for federal funds, on a cost-sharing basis, for emergency work and repair of facilities damaged by Irene.

Other counties named by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency were Northampton, Sullivan, Susquehanna and Wyoming.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures for all counties in the Commonwealth.

Thomas J. McCool, the designated Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area, said that damage surveys are continuing inthe state, and additional counties may be designated for assistance after the assessments are fully completed.
