Lenape girls making a drive for five

September 06, 2011|By Chris Melchiorre, FOR THE INQUIRER

Most of the talk surrounding the team is centered on those old, tired sports clichés, such as dream team and team of destiny.

The 2010 roster listed superstars at nearly every position, and it's bolstered this season with the addition of a few more.

No, we're not talking about the Philadelphia Eagles. Far from it. The Lenape girls' soccer team has the type of hardware that has eluded that other local team. Hence, another one of those clichés: dynasty.

Story continues below.

The Indians enter this season having won four consecutive Group 4 state championships.

Lenape coach Kevin Meder, ESPN's 2010 high school girls' soccer National Coach of the Year, is 124-11-6 in six seasons at the Medford school. But this just might be his most talented team.

So to recall a phrase from the area's other "Dream Team": Time's Yours, Lenape.

"The expectations are high," junior midfielder Tori Prager said. "But we don't focus on what other people are saying. We know nothing is going to be handed to us. We've been working hard all summer, and we're going to have to continue to work extremely hard if we want to reach our goals."

If the attention and expectations swirling about the Indians is like a tornado, then Meder has his team firmly planted in the calm, placid eye of the storm.

"We don't try to put any undue pressure on ourselves that we don't need to have," Meder said. "We try to keep the focus where it's supposed to be in high school athletics. And that's to enjoy the game, have fun, and try to get better every game.

"We have high expectations, but we know nothing is coming easy to us. There are a lot of great teams in South Jersey this year."

One of the greatest testaments to the Indians' talent is that they seem ready to simply shrug off the loss of one of their best young players.

Forward Katie Walters, who as a freshman last season led the Indians with 21 goals, is opting not to play high school soccer this season in favor of focusing on her time with the national team pool.

Lenape will miss Walters, for sure, but still fields a roster more than capable of scoring.

In total, the Indians return nine starters. They also bring back one of the top scorers in South Jersey, Katie Rigby, who led the Indians in goals in 2009 before missing last season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
