WJFL Constitution Division preview

September 07, 2011|By Phil Anastasia, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Narrow view: The WJFL Constitution Division is a two-team race that will be decided Friday night when Moorestown visits Paul VI in a battle of cofavorites.

Wider view: Watch out for Camden Catholic.

While Moorestown and Paul VI have the talent to rank among the best teams in South Jersey, and to win the Constitution title, Camden Catholic could fight its way into the mix as well.

"A lot of people are not giving us a lot of talk," said Camden Catholic two-way lineman Marcus Coleman, who has committed to Syracuse. "But we're going to be the sleeping team that really wins a lot of games."

Story continues below.

Camden Catholic has a new coach in Gil Brooks, who turned St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia into a national power. Brooks was Camden Catholic's defensive coordinator last season.

The Irish defense should be stout. Coleman anchors the line, and junior linebacker Jarred Alwan could be South Jersey's top recruit in the class of 2013.

Pete Galliano and Darien Bouzakis are top defensive backs. The Irish also have experienced two-way players such as tight end/defensive end Andrew Racobaldo, fullback/linebacker Jarrett Bragg, and lineman Jackson Callahan.

Offensively, the Irish will rely heavily on senior running back Mike Blandon.

Paul VI has won four division titles in a row, and the Eagles have the talent to make it five. Leading the way is the senior backfield duo of halfback Johnel Anderson, a game-breaker, and Matt Barnett, a punishing blocker.

Barnett also is a top linebacker. The Paul VI defense should be led by lineman Shabaz Ahmed, a Temple recruit. Lakai Robinson and Malik Groover also are top linemen for a team that likely will rely more on power this season than big plays.

Moorestown might have the most explosive offense in South Jersey. The Quakers' no-huddle, spread attack is led by senior Andrew Lisa, who passed for 2,200 yards and 24 touchdowns last season.

Moorestown junior quarterback Drew Pederson, son of Eagles assistant coach Doug Pederson, also could see some action.

Moorestown has an array of big-play men at the skill positions, including Delaney Wallace, Zac Frantz, Sidney Ruffin, and Anthony Bonett. The keys for the Quakers will be the play of the rebuilt offensive line as well as a defense that features linebacker Tim Mahaney.

Seneca has a top two-way player in tight end/defensive end Tim Flake, and Cherry Hill West features running back/defensive back Jules German and talented sophomore quarterback Rodney Williams.
